Bigotry Is NOT An American Value

Bigotry Is NOT An American Value

Oct 13, 2017

Dear NCCJ Readers,

Some of the most prominent leaders of anti-LGBT and anti-Muslim hate groups are gathering in Washington Friday for the annual Family Research Council’s Values Voter Summit, and President Donald Tump is their keynote speaker.

Trump is the first sitting United States president to speak at the "Values Voter Summit,” however this isn’t his first time speaking at the event. Trump spoke at the summit during the Republican primary race in 2015 and in 2016 just before the general election.

Hosted by the FRC and its president, Tony Perkins, a far-right extremist who relentlessly demonizes the LGBT community, this rally is aimed at making our country less inclusive based on strict, conservative Christian values, Islamophobia and homophobia.

"Values voters have waited eight years for a leader who puts America's mission first and respects the values that made America into a great nation,” said Perkins in a public statement on Tuesday.

Perkins has been so fully embraced by the president that he says he's never enjoyed so much access to the White House,  so it's not surprising that Trump is attending.

“Values voters are coming to our nation’s capital thankful to hear from a president who is fulfilling the promises that he campaigned on. Since the early days of the campaign, President Trump allied himself with values voters, promising to put an end to the 8 years of relentless assault on the First Amendment,” said Perkins.

Perkins also said Trump’s recent executive order on health care “is committed to undoing the anti-faith policies of the previous administration and restoring true religious freedom.”

Some of Trump's policies, such as the Muslim travel ban and the ban on transgender people in the military, are also inline with the FRC, and his xenophobic rhetoric has emboldened a wide swath of extremists, including the white supremacists that have now marched twice in Charlottesville, which has brought them even closer into the mainstream.

Trump's former chief strategist, Stephen Bannon, is also a major headliner. The head of Breitbart News, Bannon has boasted of using the website as "the platform for the alt-right,”  which is simply a rebranded white supremacist movement. The Muslim-bashing conspiracy theorists Frank Gaffney and Brigitte Gabriel will also be speaking.

“Values voters are coming to our nation’s capital thankful to hear from a president who is fulfilling the promises that he campaigned on,” said Perkins.

Help NCCJ and SPLC fight this hate and bigotry by spreading information about the true "values" represented at the summit.

Visit SPLC’s page on the event to learn more, and share this information to help educate others. You can view a live stream of the rally here via The White House starting at 10:00 a.m. EST.

Make sure to use your voice to combat the misinformation that leads to bigotry, hate and violence.

Sincerely,
NCCJ and SPLC
